How an Unlikely Couple Bought a Perfect House

Allen was 28, but he had never experienced the rush of emotions for a woman, as he was experiencing that very moment. Lauren was so lovely, she took his breath away. The focus of his attention was gliding towards him, like Venus in the midnight stream. He stood there unable to move.

“Hi, were you waiting for me?” Lauren declared in her mellow voice.

Allen’s heart somersaulted. He asked himself, “Is she talking to me?” With his pulse racing, he took a step towards her.

But Lauren walked past him. Allen’s eyes followed her and he was surprised to see Lauren holding the hand of a handsome, tall man.

“Yeah,” the man smiled charmingly and his brilliant eyes settled on Lauren.

“Let’s go,” Lauren piped in, and they were gone in a jiffy.

Allen sighed morosely and sat at the nearby chair. I’m such a fool, he thought. Why would she even notice me? An ugly and short excuse of a man, Dumbo! He castigated himself.

Allen had been in love with Lauren for 3 months now, but he never had the courage to tell Lauren because he had inferiority complex – he thought he was half a man because he was not handsome and tall.

They worked in the same department store but all they have been were a “hi” and “hello” acquaintances. How could Lauren notice him when all the men in the store were all dashing?

At times, Lauren wasn’t even aware that Allen existed. To her, he was just a co-worker, one of the many faces she met at work.

When Allen went home that day, he was in deep thought. He would have to act on his desire to get to know Lauren before it was too late. “Tomorrow, I’ll talk to her,” he vowed to himself. At least, he wanted to try before giving up altogether.

On his desk was a drawing of a house. Written on the top most portion of the canvas was: “My Perfect Home with Lauren”.

There were more detailed drawings of the interior of the house: 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a porch, a swimming pool, a garage, and a beautiful flower garden, with verdant trees in the far end of the yard.

He had already planned how his life with Lauren would be. “We’ll have three children and we will live happily in this perfect home for the rest of our lives.”

However, Allen’s plan of talking to Lauren the next day was stymied, when a meeting was called by their bosses. He was unable to see her again.

It was always the case. When he had enough courage to approach her, she wasn’t there, and when she was there, Allen was just too timid.

With a resigned sigh, he packed his backpack and step out of the department store feeling dejected. It was 10 p.m. and there were fewer people in the street. He was rounding the corner on his way to the bus stop, when he heard shouts for help.

He ran toward the sound and he saw three masked men dragging a woman toward a car. The woman was screaming hysterically, “Help me, help me.”

“Hey,” Allen shouted. “Let go of her,” he ran to the nearest man and pushed him away with all his might.

The woman begged for help. To Allen’s astonishment, he realized that the woman was Lauren. He had some martial arts background from his uncle, so it was not a problem tackling the three men.

The two bruised men cursed and ran away, while the last man angrily lunged at Allen and pierced his abdomen with something sharp. Allen doubled up in pain as his hands covered the bleeding hole in his stomach.

Lauren screamed in fright when she saw Allen’s bloodied body. She ran to him and tried to quell the bleeding with her hands. “Help, please help!” she screamed in terror, as the culprit bolted away in haste.

The ruckus attracted passers-by, and one dialed for the ambulance. Allen was losing his consciousness. He drifted in and out of it, aware of Lauren, screaming for help. “At last he noticed me,” he smiled, “and I have her full attention. I can die now.”

Then everything went black for Allen.

The ambulance arrived a few minutes later and the health care provider rendered first aid to Allen. Allen was as pale as a ghost, the blood draining rapidly from his wound. The medic was shaking her head in sadness, as the ambulance, its siren wailing, sped to the hospital.

Lauren had followed Allen inside the ambulance. Her face was smudged with black spots from her mascara, as she shed tears of fear. She had to stand as Allen’s guardian because Allen’s family was not yet notified.

“Poor man,” Lauren sobbed, “he just wanted to help and look, what happened to him.”

She felt obligated to stay beside him. He had saved her life.

The long hours dragged on slowly as the doctors operated on Allen to save him. Finally, after 24 hours, Allen regained his senses. He woke up to see his father by his bedside. He told him he had been unconscious for more than 24 hours.

Allen scanned the room for Lauren, but she wasn’t there. His heart sank. “Well, what did I expect?” he laughed to himself. “I’m nothing to her, even if I have saved her life, and almost died doing it, it wouldn’t matter to her.”

“What’s the matter?” his father asked him.

Allen replied sadly, “Nothing Pa.”

Just then the door opened and Lauren appeared before him like and angel who had stepped down from heaven: her long, straight hair flowing into her shoulders like black waterfalls; her eyes sparkling and clear; her lips parted into a sweet smile; and her attire silhouetted her perfect body.

Allen gasped in awe, and his heart leapt with joy. She’s here, she’s here!

“Oh, you’re up already,” Lauren said gaily. “I’m so glad my knight in shining armor is okay,” she stated, as she stepped closer to Allen.

Allen was on cloud nine. “Was this real?” He asked the high heavens in silence.

“I’ll take care of you until you’re well,” she volunteered.

And she did.

She visited Allen regularly until he was discharged from the hospital. During the time that they were together, Lauren discovered that aside from his bravery, Allen was a kind, tender and caring person.

It didn’t matter that he was an inch shorter than she was, and it didn’t matter that he was not as handsome as a movie star. What mattered to Lauren was Allen’s beautiful and good heart.

They had discovered that they had a lot in common too; they had even the same birthdays – July 25th.

When Allen was recuperating at home, Lauren visited often. They had now a bond that had developed slowly but strongly.

When Lauren saw the perfect house drawn by Allen, she fell for him irrevocably. It was bound to happen and they both knew it.

Allen proposed to Lauren a month after, and no one could have guessed that Lauren had been indifferent with Allen, one month back.

Of course, Lauren accepted Allen’s proposal and they got married one wonderful day - the 8th of September.

After their marriage, they started building their house on the land they had purchased with their savings. It would be difficult at first, and they have to tighten their belts. But that wouldn’t be a Calvary for them because they were doing it together.

No matter what the hardships were as long as they are together, it would be heaven for them. They had planned to build their perfect home, while they raise their kids in an atmosphere of trust and love.

So, for you out there who dreams of a perfect home with his/her beloved, keep dreaming - nothing is impossible to a determined mind.
