How a Housewife Made Big Business Out of Selling Real Estate Properties

Her name was Amanda, an ‘ordinary’ housewife, who was forced to sell real estate properties during her spare time because she needed money to support her family. Her husband, Arvin, was a grade school teacher in their local area. His salary was so meager; she could barely make both ends meet.

Life was not easy, so Amanda made use of her cell phone and her contacts to conduct her business at home. When her customers needed to tour the property, she would oblige, bringing along her 6-year old kid.It was a hit and miss business at first, because people don’t know her. In addition, by the end of the year, no one was interested in buying houses because the economy was down and there were no lucrative jobs. But Amanda plodded on, not giving up in spite of rejections left and right.

She had already spent a significant amount of money in transporting to and fro potential clients, who wanted to tour the property. But she kept her faith. She knew her diligence would pay off handsomely one day. Whenever she was down, she reminded herself of Kentucky Fried chicken’s Colonel Harland Sanders, whom everyone refused at first. Sanders’ chicken recipe was rejected a number of times, but he persisted, until someone finally agreed, and the rest is history.

One day, I will have my first sale, Amanda gritted through her teeth. That day came for her when her friend’s aunt, who was visiting from the States, wanted to buy a house for her niece. Amanda was on cloud nine when she finally received her first commission. Her commission was substantial because the price of the property was Php 10.5 million. It was enough for her to buy a modest bungalow. She had already planned to roll her earnings to make more money.

This is what she did:

  • With her initial 3% commission, Php 315,000, she purchased a bungalow. Before she bought the property, she had already a buyer in mind – a couple who just got married and were looking for a house near their place of work. They both worked as college instructors in the nearby university. She renovated the house according to the couples’ preferences and sold it to them for Php 400,000. It was paid in cash, the couple had filed a joint salary deduction loan and they were happy to acquire a new home based on what they wanted.Amanda earned a net of Php 50,000. Not bad for a novice broker. Amanda’s amiable ways, honesty and sincerity have also won over her clients.
  • From there, she bought and renovated two more houses and sold them at reasonable prices. The buyers opted to pay in monthly installments, but this didn’t bother Amanda. She was in a roll and money was steadily flowing in.
  • She wanted to be a licensed broker, so she attended a week-long seminar and hands-on training where she acquired her license as a broker.
  • She opened an office at a corner of her living room, and she was all set to go. After that, her business grew as she began purchasing lands for commercial purposes. It was a hard sell, but when a property was sold, the commission was enough for Amanda to buy another property.
  • She was now well-known as a licensed broker and people seek her out for advice, or to buy and sell their properties. She still lives in her modest apartment. But she has a mansion in the province.

Amanda has achieved her dreams of being able to take care of her family and earn a living. That’s the advantage of being engaged in a real estate business. If you want to go into real estate business too, here are the other advantages you can reap.

Advantages of real estate business

  • You are your own boss – you don’t report to anyone but yourself. You don’t have to force yourself to get along with your officemates.
  • Your work time is flexible – you can work any time at your own convenience. No one will force you to wake up early in the morning.
  • You can do it part-time – Amanda had done it while baby-sitting. You don’t have to spend your whole day doing business. Unless necessary.
  • You can do business at home – Amanda has set an office in her home. You can do that too. You don’t have to rent a big place as an office. A table and a chair in a corner of your house will do.
  • Everybody needs a house, so your product is saleable – everyone wants a house, so you’ll never be out of customers.
  • You can use your own product – if you cannot sell the house, you can use it. It will never go to waste.
  • There are many venues for expansion – you can branch out into buying lands, or becoming a big time developer.
  • The pay is great – yes, it pays handsomely. The higher the price of the property, the higher your commission. Locally, the commissions of brokers run from 2% to 5%. If you sell a 10 million piece of property, your commission would be somewhere between 200,000 to 500,000. Isn’t that awesome?
  • You can play while you work – you can also play while you work. This can be done rarely in almost all jobs today. In other jobs, you won’t have time for playing.

The next step for Amanda is to hire trusted agents, who will help her attend to her growing clients. Gradually the small business that Amanda started would be turning into a business conglomerate, where she is the boss and CEO.

She may also want to go international. With the Internet and a computer, she could easily do that. She doesn’t need to spend a large sum of money to go international. Her clients would be more diverse and loaded. The ‘plain housewife’ has become a successful real estate entrepreneur. Thanks to her dedication and determined mind, she was able to succeed.

Congratulations, Amanda. May your tribe increase!
